It's pretty awesome, and it spurs the player on to new challenges. When XCOM 2 is "on" then it's really "on." Customizing your soldiers, building projects, landing the killing blows on enemies, having flawless missions, and breaking through with new weapons and armor. So what do you mean by it being "the best?" Which is why XCOM 2 isn't for you today, it's for you after many, many hours of suffering. And I got the Dark Souls-esque response of "git gud." And really, that's what XCOM are about. I went into the XCOM subreddit and whined like a little bitch. What did I do after being wiped out in 5 missions? I did what any normal gamer in 2020 would do. Since I'd played Enemy Unknown, I figured I at least had some skin in the game. With XCOM 2, the default setting is called "Veteran," which is difficulty 2/4, and suggests it's for people who have played an XCOM before. King, Emperor, Immortal and Deity are just various forms of suffering, but some people seem to enjoy it. The default setting of Chieftain seems to be good enough for most beginners, while Warlord is a bit more of a veteran challenge, and Prince seems to be the sweet spot for many experienced Civ players. The main difference, however, is that Firaxis provides players of Civilizations numerous modes in which they wish to either thrive or suffer. Similarly, XCOM 2 is one of those games where you're like, really? I spent 104 hours on this thing in the last month? Yes, yes you did. For example, we've all laughed at the "one more turn" with Civilizations, only to look at the window and realize the sun is about to vaporize you like a vampire. Boom, game over, loser.įiraxis makes some amazing games, which steal your time like almost no other company steals your time. You're going to have no idea what you're doing, build the wrong things, make the wrong moves, get your squad killed, and then watch as the Avatar project literally ends your game. At first it isn't for you, because currently you suck at XCOM 2. It's for a future you, a you who has played about 50-60 hours of XCOM 2 first. I'm sure nobody needs another XCOM 2 review, but after finally finishing it in 104 hours, I wanted to share a few thoughts about the experience.įirst of all, if you've never played an XCOM game, then this game isn't for you.
